ndshb.com News News: WiFi Game Competition - Winners Announced!

Everyone's a winner! Find out in what order!

****1st place, Explosive Gas

Lynx's comments:
- Very nice graphics and the sound effects are amazing.. If it wasn't for the points.. I'd catch myself on fire just to hear me screem!
- WiFi lobby works great and anyone can host a server without doing anything more than forward port 9999 to your DS and launch the server!
- The ability to choose 'Join Game' and 'Join LAN Game' allow both local LAN DSs to play along with internet DSs. Very nice!
- Playing and starting a game is very easy to do and strait forward.
- Anyone can join at any time.. If you join after the game has started, you get to watch the current players till the round is over.. how awesome is that? It also seems to handle disconnects gracefully. Very well done and thought out.

LiraNuna's comments:
Amazing graphics and sound effects. similar to Lynx, I actually ran this game and killed myself just to hear the funny screaming those little homeless people did! I love the game theme and the fact that it's so easy to setup a server as well as joining one. Overall professional game.

****2nd place, PhotoCup DS

Lynx's comments:
- Interesting multi-player concept..
- Graphics could use some help, but the time and score graphics look pretty good.. if only it had a nicer ROUND #, Touch to continue, WiFi Screens, etc. screens.. :)
- Love the signed high scores!
- Setup screen is nice, being able to set the difficulty and orientation is nice.

LiraNuna's comments:
This one might look simple, but it's actually nice via multiplayer. different orientation modes and [adult swim] pictures made my day. A thing i must note too, the signed high scores is just brilliant! rather then setting up a keyboard - you write your name!

****3rd place, WiFi Blubb

Lynx's comments:
- Very nice lobby with pictochat. I just wish it could handle mutiple DSs at one location, as well as internet players.
- Joining/starting games is.. well.. hard. I had to play around for a while just try to figure out how start a game.. This one definatly REQUIRES instructions of some sort to explain how to start a game, as well as how to play once the game is started.
- The game itself is very nice and fun to play. Figuring out a strategy takes some time, but is part of the fun.

LiraNuna's comments:
Wifi action is now moving to the sea. multiplayer battle ship is fun, although you do need some time to get used to it. Being able to communicate while game is in progress is what makes a multiplayer game complete (and even with colors!).

****4th place, IRCDS

Lynx's comments:
- Well, I couldn't even test this one, as I don't have .net installed to run the setup program. I don't think Nintendo DS games should REQUIRE the user to have a windows PC to use it. I mean.. how would I do it if I am running Linux? But, since we only have 4 entries anyway, I'll send you something.. :)

LiraNuna's comments:
awww.... poor LiraNuna is a Linux user :(
so he couldn't run that .exe in the package, not even with WINE...
Sorry bud...

Prizes!

Explosive Gas = XBox 360
Photo Cup DS = Palm Z22
WiFi Blubb = GBA MP + 512MB CF card
IRCDS = GBA MP

OBJECTION!

Your Honor, I have evidence that Lynx could have tested IRCDS. I present to the court a log of #dsdev from July 2nd:

[02:16] :(
[02:18] Geez... .net for IRCDS
[02:18] Command line app would've done ;-;
[02:22] * MrDee|DS has joined #dsdev
[02:22] * [NDS] sets mode: +v MrDee|DS
[02:23] Well how about that? :)
[02:23] Go, ircds!
[02:24] * MrDee|DS gets pompoms and does a dance
[02:24] any screenshots for ircds? i don't have either of the requirements :/
[02:24] Wait a sec
[02:24] me either.
[02:24] I'll take a photo for you
[02:24] :(
[02:24] thanks :)
[02:26] how does it save the config data btw? could it be done with a text/hex editor?
[02:27] certainly
[02:28] MrDee|DS:MrDee|DS:MrD?:[ IRCDS 0.1 by freemaan ]:irc.efnet.nl:6667:0:0:
[02:28] nickname:username:realname:quit message:server:port:?:?
[02:28] don't know about the last two
[02:28] but the rest is plaintext with colon seperators
[02:28] dsirc.cfg
[02:28] filename?
[02:29] The program saves them both to the flashcards root
[02:29] A batch file could've done it -_-;
[02:30] i would have been more then happy with just a sample config :)
[02:30] :/
[02:30] * [DS]LynxH agrees

Uuuuuunless that's a different Lynx. In which case I object again and move for a mistrial!

That would be true.. But when judging entries, we MUST judge what is provided, not what we "can" do or "may be able" to do. In other words, I could have sorted through source code and figured that out.. Or, if there is a trouble with an entry, we could go through and make changes to the source to make it work.. but.. would that be fair? If you don't think the competition was judged fair, please post a message in the forums providing examples of what and why the outcome should have been how you think.
